Renters insurance is for renters to cover damages or losses to their personal properties in case some accidents (e.g. fire) happen. Landlords insurance covers only the physical building, therefore renters insurance is recommended for all those who rent, because landlords are generally not responsible for renter's own property.
This type of insurance does not only cover the personal belongings in the house, but also:
- some type of properties outside the house, e.g. renter's car
- liability coverage in case of lawsuits, e.g. medical bills from guests injured in your rented apartment
- additional living expense
Similar to homeowner insurance, damages and losses due to earthquake and flood are normally not covered in renter's insurance, but special coverage can be bought separately.
